When Betsy and Josh reached out to me looking to plan a coastal New England engagement photo session, I was so excited to get out of the house and spend some time on the beach. I love the beach in all seasons, especially in the winter when it’s colder and much emptier. We were lucky on this January day at Napatree to get some exceptionally warm weather with a nice mix of overcast skies and light just before sunset. Napatree Point is one of my favorite spots in Rhode Island and I especially love it during the off/shoulder season. The beach trail out to the point is one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline that I know of in New England and it’s been a constant source of photographic inspiration for years. In the summer, I love watching the sailboats pass by into the harbor just off the shore.
Like every engagement session, I worked with Betsy and Josh to plan theirs so that it felt, for the most part, like we were just hanging out. We went for a walk down the beach and then through the paths that lead into the dunes, got to know each other, and talked about their wedding plans. In the background, we caught glimpses of the stunning Ocean House as the lights turned at dusk. Documenting their afternoon together on the beach as they watched the sunset felt effortless and natural with no weird or cheesy poses.
